WHAT IS LIFE INSURANCE AND DO I NEED IT?

Life insurance is a financial product that pays out a lump sum or regular income to your beneficiaries if you pass away during the policy term. It's designed to provide financial security for your loved ones, helping them cover everyday living costs, mortgage payments, debts, and future expenses like education.

If you have dependents, a mortgage, or debts that would pass to others, life insurance is essential. It ensures your family can maintain their standard of living without financial hardship.

Even if you're self-employed or a business owner, life insurance protects against the loss of your income and can cover business debts or buy-out arrangements.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TERM LIFE AND WHOLE LIFE INSURANCE?

Term life insurance covers you for a specific period (typically 10-40 years) and pays out only if you die during that term. It's generally more affordable and ideal for covering specific commitments like mortgages or whilst children are dependent.

Whole life insurance (also called whole of life) covers you for your entire lifetime and is guaranteed to pay out eventually. It's more expensive but can be used for inheritance tax planning or guaranteed funeral costs.

We also offer decreasing term insurance, where the payout reduces over time to match a repayment mortgage, and family income benefit, which pays a regular income rather than a lump sum. The right choice depends on your specific needs and budget.

WHAT IS CRITICAL ILLNESS COVER?

Critical illness cover pays out a tax-free lump sum if you're diagnosed with a serious illness specified in your policy, such as cancer, heart attack, stroke, multiple sclerosis, or kidney failure. Most policies cover 40-50 conditions, though this varies by provider.

The payout can be used however you wish – to pay off your mortgage, cover living expenses whilst you recover, fund private medical treatment, or adapt your home. You can take it out as a standalone policy or combined with life insurance.

It's particularly valuable if you're self-employed or wouldn't receive generous sick pay. The definitions of conditions and what qualifies for payout vary between insurers, so it's important to compare policies carefully and understand what's covered.

HOW MUCH LIFE INSURANCE COVER DO I NEED?

The amount of cover you need depends on your individual circumstances. As a general guide, consider your outstanding mortgage balance, other debts, funeral costs (typically £4,000-£9,000), and your family's ongoing living expenses.

Many financial advisers suggest 10 times your annual income as a starting point, but this isn't one-size-fits-all. For self-employed individuals, consider business debts and the time needed to replace your role.

Think about how long your family would need financial support – until children finish education, or until a spouse retires. We'll conduct a thorough needs analysis considering your mortgage, income, dependents, existing savings, and future expenses to calculate the right level of protection for your specific situation.

WHAT IS INCOME PROTECTION INSURANCE?

Income protection insurance pays a regular monthly income (typically 50-70% of your gross salary) if you're unable to work due to illness or injury. Unlike critical illness cover which pays a lump sum for specific conditions, income protection covers any illness or injury that prevents you from working, continuing until you can return to work, retire, or the policy ends.

There's usually a deferred period (typically 4, 13, 26, or 52 weeks) before payments begin, allowing you to use sick pay or savings initially. It's especially valuable for self-employed individuals who don't have employer sick pay.

The premiums are typically lower than critical illness cover, and it provides ongoing financial support for longer-term health issues, protecting your ability to pay bills and maintain your lifestyle whilst you recover.

CAN I GET LIFE INSURANCE WITH PRE-EXISTING HEALTH CONDITIONS?

Yes, it's usually possible to get life insurance with pre-existing health conditions, though the terms and premiums will depend on your specific circumstances. Insurers will assess factors including the type of condition, when you were diagnosed, current treatment, and how well controlled it is.

Common conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, or previous cancer may result in higher premiums or specific exclusions, but cover is often still available. Some conditions may require a medical examination or GP report.

It's crucial to disclose all health conditions honestly on your application – non-disclosure could invalidate your policy. Some insurers are more lenient with certain conditions than others.

WHAT IS KEY MAN INSURANCE FOR BUSINESSES?

Key man insurance (also called key person insurance) protects your business against the financial impact of losing a crucial employee, director, or partner due to death or critical illness. The business pays the premiums and receives the payout, which can be used to cover lost revenue, recruit and train a replacement, repay debts, or reassure investors and creditors.

The "key person" is typically someone whose absence would significantly affect the company's profitability or operations – often founders, top salespeople, or individuals with specialist knowledge. The sum assured is usually based on the individual's contribution to profits or the cost of replacing them.

For limited companies, premiums aren't usually tax-deductible, but for partnerships and sole traders, they often are. It's essential business protection, particularly for small companies heavily reliant on specific individuals.

HOW MUCH DOES LIFE INSURANCE COST?

Life insurance costs vary significantly based on several factors: your age, health, whether you smoke, the amount of cover, policy length, and type of policy. As a rough guide, a healthy 30-year-old non-smoker might pay £10-£20 per month for £200,000 of term life cover over 25 years, whilst a 45-year-old might pay £30-£50 for the same cover.

Adding critical illness cover typically doubles the premium. Whole life insurance is considerably more expensive. Premiums are generally fixed for the policy term, so taking out cover when you're younger locks in lower rates.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INCOME PROTECTION AND CRITICAL ILLNESS?

Income protection and critical illness cover serve different purposes and pay out differently. Critical illness cover pays a one-off lump sum if you're diagnosed with a specific serious illness from a defined list, regardless of whether you can work. Income protection pays a regular monthly income if you cannot work due to any illness or injury, continuing until you return to work or the policy ends.

Critical illness is useful for paying off debts or covering large one-time expenses, whilst income protection replaces lost earnings for ongoing bills. Income protection typically costs less and covers a broader range of conditions, but critical illness provides a larger immediate sum for serious diagnoses.

Many people benefit from having both – critical illness for specific major illnesses and their immediate costs, and income protection for longer-term income replacement from any health issue preventing work.

DO I NEED LIFE INSURANCE IF I'M SELF-EMPLOYED?

Life insurance is arguably even more important if you're self-employed. Unlike employed individuals, you don't have employer-provided death in service benefits, and your income stops immediately if you die or become seriously ill.

If you have a mortgage, business loans, or family depending on your income, life insurance ensures they're protected. Self-employed individuals should also strongly consider income protection, as you won't receive statutory sick pay or employer sick leave.

If you have business partners, shareholder protection or partnership insurance can fund buy-out arrangements if one partner dies or becomes critically ill, preventing forced sales or disputes. Your business itself may have value that could be lost without proper succession planning.
